Natural skincare products we love

Are you worried about all those hard-to-pronounce additives in your generic skincare products? It might be time to upgrade to natural skin care products.

It’s a good idea to be wary of chemicals and additives in your skin care products. After all, everything we put on our skin eventually goes into our bodies and our bloodstream.

And don’t even get us started on the amount of plastic waste that generic skin care products generate! From serums to face wash to moisturizer bottles, that’s a LOT of plastic.

With these natural skin care products, you’re putting healthier ingredients on your body and saving tons of plastic waste from the landfill. Win-win!

Before we share our best natural skin care routine with you, let’s explore what nasties to look out for when buying skin care products.

Worst skin care products for your face

Generic skin products are full of harmful chemicals. When buying skin care products, look out for sketchy chemicals. Here are the worst offenders.

  • Parabens

Parabens are preservatives added to skin care products to increase their shelf life. They kill mould and bacteria. Unfortunately, they’re a hormone disruptor that’s linked to cancer.

  • Phthalates

Phthalates are used to soften plastics and make them flexible. They’re also used as a solvent, and found in many skin-care products. They’ve been linked to hormone disruption, type 2 diabetes, and lung irritation.

  • SLS

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) is a common sudsing agent and surfactant. You know how generic shampoo and toothpaste makes a luxuriously foamy lather? Be wary of too-good-to-be-true clouds of foam–SLS is a known skin and lung irritant.

  • Triclosan

Similar to parabens, triclosan has antimicrobial properties to preserve shelf life. But it’s an endocrine disruptor (hormone messer-upper). It’s linked to all sorts of conditions, like thyroid disease and diabetes.

  • Artificial dyes

Artificial dyes make the product look more appealing. Anytime you see “F” or “C” on the list of ingredients, that’s usually the sign of artificial dyes. They irritate the skin and are a possible carcinogen.

What to look for in natural skin care products

When looking for natural skincare products, look for the absence of the aforementioned chemicals. You should also look for natural oils. Oils like grapeseed, almond, and coconut are great plant-based, nutrient-rich oils for your skin.

Fruit and flower essences are also a great additive that are nutrient-dense, with the added benefit of smelling lovely. They eliminate the need for synthetic fragrances, and make the products an absolute joy to use.

At Roots Refillery, we have tons of natural skincare products you’ll love!

Makeup removal

Makeup removal is easy with the Revive Eye Makeup Remover Balm by Elate. This waterless makeup remover lifts mascara, eyeliner, eyeshadow and blush off your face. Containing jojoba oil (a source of vitamin E) and almond oil (a source of vitamin A), it doubles as skin food. The calming chamomile even soothes your eye area as you sleep.

To remove makeup, just swipe our Reusable Makeup Remover Pads over the balm and gently wipe your face. Washing your reusable pads is easy. Hand wash in the sink with warm soapy water, or toss them in the mesh drawstring bag and into the washing machine!

Wash

Wash your face in the morning and before bed with these natural face wash options.

Ditch the bottle with Bottlenone face wash bar. These face wash bars are pH balanced to reduce irritation, and when stored properly, they’ll last you 2-3 months. Choose between “Normal To Dry” or “Normal To Oily” depending on your skin type.

For a heavy duty clean, wash up with the Pickle & Bee facial scrub. This luxurious face wash transports you to the spa, with fine pumice granules suspended in whipped shea butter and coconut oil. Facial scrubs slough off dead skin cells, which can clog the pores and lead to breakouts.

Cleanse

The Cottonwood Usnea Cleanser Oil by Woods & Blooms unclogs pores, removes excess sebum, and sloughs off dead skin. “Usnea” (tree lichen) infused oil has antimicrobial and antifungal properties, and is great for preventing breakouts.

Follow up your cleanse with I Lilac Your Face foaming cleanser. Lilac water has an astringent quality, so no need for harsh astringents and toners.

Nourish

Hello Hydration Facial Mist by Woods & Blooms is a great way to start your day. It contains hyaluronic acid, a naturally occuring substance found in the joints and eyes that helps the skin stay plump and hydrated. Rose petals are naturally antibacterial, helping to prevent breakouts.

The Anti-Red Serum by Rose Citron helps improve the appearance of acne, rosacea, eczema, and psoriasis in the face. It contains carrot oil, which helps to rejuvenate and regenerate skin cells. To use, place a few drops on your fingers, tap onto your skin, and let the serum absorb into the skin. Avoid excessive rubbing.

Moisturize

A face washing routine is no good without a proper moisturizing routine to keep your skin hydrated. Oneka Face Cream feels light on the skin and doesn’t block pores. With antioxidant-rich oils and vitamins E and B5, it also nourishes your skin.

24 Carrot Glow Face Cream by Woods & Blooms contains beta carotene, an antioxidant that helps reduce oxidative stress on the skin. It also contains niacinamide (vitamin B3) which promotes skin elasticity and treats blotchiness, and zinc oxide, a natural sunblocker.
